Janne Corneil, a principal at Sasaki Associates has studied the relationship of institutions to their host cities. Here is a 57-minute presentation on Vimeo about her experience on how design supports innovation districts. Take a closer look at their work at University of Calgary.
In the video, Jane talks about WHERE innovation can occur. Consider the map of college graduates from The Atlantic magazine. If higher ed plays the role of feeder to the corporations in the innovation districts, does this map show the likely places where innovation districts will be developed in the next decade??
Jane suggests we think about second tier cities as part of a region, an entrepreneurial ecosystem. After all, there are 1,800 four-year universities in the United States and not all of them are in the top 100 metros.
